The Clorox Lounge - Being Frugal With Kids and it Backfiring

The Clorox Lounge - Being Frugal With Kids and it Backfiring

As a member of SocialMoms I had to take them up on their invite to help celebrate the fun about a new web site that was launched recently by The Clorox Family of Toilet Products!! I will tell you more about that celebration later in this post!

As a frugal Mother you all know how I love to save a penny at any second I can, I hate to spend money when I know there is another route around it! So with that in mind I would like to share a story with you about one of my daughters.

As many of my readers know I have a 18yr old daughter, but this story is about when she was 16yrs.old. Her birthday was such a huge event for her just as any other 16yr.old teenager's birthday was. At this age all of the high school girls had one of the many things in common! Owning a real Coach Purse was like the biggest thing. You were the "coolest" if you had a official Coach Purse!!

Whats missing in this picture!!

My daughter wanted badly to have a authentic Coach Purse as a birthday gift, she just had to have it. Me,  frugal as can be I wanted to make her happy but at the same time I wanted to be a "happy frugal spender", so I started my mission! I was on a mission to make this girl happy, I knew that our local flee market "Green Dragon" carried everything that all the cool teenagers wanted. Not only did they have the "cool" items, they had the items at a very reasonable discounted price! The price they had was for the purchase of the items, a-k-a "knock offs"  not just for the "logo" name of whatever expensive name brand someone was looking for. So, yes!!!! I purchased a $45 generic Coach Bag! The one she wanted was well over $300. As the generic had all of the same patterns and looked just the same I went with it, what she didn't know didn't hurt!!
So, on her birthday when she opened her gift, she was so excited to receive the Coach Purse, she opened it in so much joy and excitement. We were taking pictures and all, everything was going real smoothly intill she started pulling out all of the tissue paper that was stuffed inside of the purse. When she pulled out the original price tag I was so surprised! Usually I'm very good at taking off price tags for gift items, but somehow I forgot to take this tag out!!! When she pulled it out and read the price and place I purchased this knock-off item at her smile dropped!!!! I'm sure you can imagine the rest of this story!!!

Do you have a story to share about when you were frugal with your kids and it Backfiring? I'd love to hear about it!

My daughter is 26 and still has not owned a purse that even cost $45. I am and have to be very frugal. She is married to a great mom who earns enough for her to be a SAHM (which she is tremendous at.) They have both a car and an Suv etc When she asked me what I wanted for Mother's Day. I told her I'd like to go shopping at a certain store in PA about 35 miles from here and stop for a steak at the Chinese buffet. She looked at me, just like I usta look at her and said mom your joking right? With gas at $4.08 a gallon I know you don't really want me to drive that far away for Chinese and for you to grab something off the clearance rack do you?? Looking really puzzled like I was gonna say no, not really. Never let your children know if your without a car, it is like reversing roles!
